Kynwyn’s musical journey began in very early childhood, having grown up in a musical household and started piano lessons at 6 years old. Every summer as a kid, she went to Hummingbird Music Camp in Jemez Springs, NM where she had the opportunity to gain more skills in piano as well as an introduction to percussion, guitar, and vocals. Her passion and pursuit of the drum set began in high school when she started her first band, and led her to study with master drummer Mike Johnston and attend his week long intensive drum camps. She has since earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Jazz Drum Performance from California Institute of the Arts, where she studied under jazz drummer Joe Labarbera. There she also studied jazz keyboard, as well as many world music styles including Ghanian drumming, the Indian tabla, and Balinese gamelan.
Since graduation, Kynwyn has toured extensively throughout the US and Europe, written and recorded her own music, and earned an artist endorsement with Aquarian Drumheads. She has performed on many notable video sessions including NPR’s Tiny Desk with neo-soul guitarist Naia Izumi and Audiotree Live with progressive synth pop band Crying. She is also a co-founder and administrator of Odd Times and Atmospheres, an online community and resource for progressive and experimental musicians.
Kynwyn has recently moved from Upland, CA to Portland, OR to live with her partner and expand her recording and teaching. She loves working with students of all ages and helping them find and maintain a passion and love for music!
