Lydia grew up in Michigan, where at seven years old, she begged her parents for piano lessons. She fell in love with the music and studied piano through high school, when she began teaching private lessons. During that time, Lydia also began playing flute, studying with Suzuki teacher, performer, and composer Kelly McDermott. The Suzuki method sparked a passion for nurturing and celebrating each child's musical journey, as well as centering listening and memorization to develop musicianship. In addition to orchestral and chamber ensembles, Lydia studied Jazz in Michigan's respected Community High School Jazz program.
While earning her B. A. in Psychology at Earlham College, Lydia immersed herself in the musical community. She continued to study flute, receiving a Departmental Award for musicianship. She also received a Len Holvik scholarship to study voice and joined the EC Women's Chorus. This singing community gave her the opportunity to take master classes with composers such as Mari Valverde and Joan Szymko, while also deepening her dedication to music's power for expression and social activism. In addition to classical recitals and ensembles, Lydia co-led the Contra dance band Squirrel Jive and the folk singing group Horse Radish Harmonizers.
Lydia focuses on proper form and ease of motion in all of her instruction. She is passionate about embodiment and has studied various somatic practices, including Alexander Technique and Gendlin Focusing. Lydia works with her students to connect with their own creativity by grounding and bringing awareness to the body, while also developing techniques to release tension and prevent injury.
In addition to her experience teaching piano and flute groups, Lydia has taught children and adults in a variety of settings, including museums, outdoor ed, meditation retreats, academic tutoring, and IDD services. She strives to attune to each individual's strengths and needs, and infuses an energy of curiosity and wonder into her teaching.
