Michael Severson began playing music in high school as a guitarist and choral singer. His interests in music theory, composition, and improvisation soon drew him towards the piano, and eventually towards playing jazz. At Lewis & Clark College he studied with great Portland pianists Randy Porter, and Susan Smith, who were instrumental in his musical development. He also studied guitar, voice, composition, and conducting, and was deemed "a musical Renaissance man" by the head of the music department. In 2016 he graduated with honors with a Bachelor of Arts in Music with a concentration in Piano Performance.
Michael is currently working at Portland Community College and Lewis & Clark College as a jazz pianist, accompanist, and conductor. He also conducts multiple choirs at Blueprint Ensemble Arts in NE Portland, and frequently performs with many of Portland's great jazz vocalists. Michael continues to pursue his deep love of teaching and is always thrilled to work with students of all ages and experience levels. With contagious passion and enthusiasm, he is eager to help others become expressive, well-rounded musicians.
